Welcome to the latest edition of Tell Me About It: A Biz Babe Interview Series! This month we are hearing from Emily Thompson who is the founder of Almanac Supply Co + Being Boss.
This series is meant to be an inside look at other babes who are leading incredible lives, to serve as a source of information and inspiration for you to live your dream life! Let’s get after it!
What’s your company / job / “who” you work as?
I’ve spent 10+ years helping creatives build businesses through websites, coaching, and the Being Boss podcast and book. Now I’m back to being the creative, making and curating products for my shop for nature lovers, Almanac Supply Co.
Your career purpose, in three words:
Encourage creative fulfillment
What are you most excited about right now?
After years of talking about things like brand positioning and email marketing to creative business owners, I feel my content evolving into deep topics of creativity with ties to living seasonally and in tune with nature. It’s exciting to be experiencing this evolution and next level of encouraging creatives that’s so much deeper and more fulfilling than marketing strategies and tactics.
What were some of the biggest obstacles you faced in the past year?
Some of my biggest obstacles have been the walls I’ve hit in trying to do things that weren’t ultimately serving my core purpose (like a failed Facebook ads campaign or needing to downsize a team that wasn’t serving my long term goals), so each one has been a blessing in disguise because they’ve shown me that there was a better alternative that I was ignoring, but that hasn’t made them really hurt any less. But THAT’S the entrepreneurial journey.
List the top habits that keep you feeling like you can take on the world:
Weekly planning (because I’m the boss of my schedule)
Getting enough sleep (I’ve always been a pro)
Lots of walks (to allow my brain to process all the things)
Any words of encouragement for someone trying to forge their own path?
Make sure your goals are *your* goals, and not someone else’s. As long as your goals are truly aligned with what you value, the work to get there will always be worth it.
It’s time to dance, and you’re the DJ. What music are you playing?
90s pop, all day.
What book(s) changed how you think about work + biz most?
If I could collab with anyone right now, it would be…
National Parks Service
When I need to hit the “reset” button on my life, I…
take a long hike in the woods
I can’t start my day without…
brushing my teeth… that’s the divider between morning and everything that comes after.
I feel the most alive when I…
am exploring a new place.
And lastly: what’s your biggest win this month? Brag about yourself!
I got invited by an organizer to apply to do a TedX talk in my hometown! I still have to apply, but the invitation to do so was like a high five from the Universe.
